RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

There are plenty of cute references to the original “Planet of the Apes,” such as the name Bright Eyes, which was given to Charlton Heston , and the inclusion of that great line from the original: “Take your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape!” but the dependence on special effects removes all the charm that the first movie had. There is an attempt to discover a cure for Alzheimer’s with some magic potion but it didn’t work on the producers because somewhere along the line they forgot what made the original Planet Movie a classic. Their dependence on special effects reduces it to just another “look what we can do with computers these days”. What’s missing from “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” is  a love interest for Caesar, the Alpha Ape who leads the uprising of this merry band of marauding monkeys. Maybe Caesar will get his Cleopatra in an inevitable sequel to this simian snoozer.  And since the sequel will probably take place in San Francisco, too, there is sure to be a back story where the mayor of San Francisco legalizes same simian marriages.
